Abstract
Vocal cord paralysis is a commonly occurring problem with numerous etiologies. The
evokes electhomyographic test is the most useful test in estimating the degree of injury,
determining the prognosis and establishing the policy of treatment. 100 normal subjects
and 333 patients with vocal cord paralysis were examined with this test. No evoked
wave was shown in cases with complete paralysis of vocal cord. Latency delayed and
amplitude diminished of the evoked wave were detected in cases with partial paralysis
of vocal cord. Supramaximal electrostimulations of 100-200 voltage were delivered as
rectangular pulse of 0.2msec duration at a rate of 1-2/sec. Out of 292 cases, 189 of
monovocal cord paralysis were improved with dysphonia. Among 41 cases, 20 of
bilateral vocal cord paralysis were effective with improvement of dysphonia. 62.8% of
total rate of effectiveness was obtained. Generally speaking, this therapeutic method was
more effective for patients of partial block of laryngeal nerve. Injury caused by invasion
of malignant cancer had a poor prognosis.
